Hamburg is the most beautiful city in the world. All Hamburgers say that, of course, but there are also many non-Hanseatic people who see it that way. It would be pointless to list all the tourist destinations here, there are simply too many. But the harbour is what makes Hamburg what it is. For centuries it has been called the gateway to the world, huge container ships are loaded here and set sail from Hamburg with their cargo. Little boys stand at the jetties and are sure that one day they will be ship captains and explore the wide world. Lovers hold hands on a balmy summer night, get wanderlust and dream of their honeymoon. If you come out of a harbour pub early in the morning, you can only go to the St. Pauli fish market to eat fish sandwiches and enjoy the sunrise while exhausted. The harbour is the place to dream, the place for a pleasant dose of melancholy. And Hamburg is also the gateway to Scandinavia. Many holidaymakers from the south use the Urlaubs-Express to explore the beautiful north of Europe by car or motorbike from the Hamburg-Altona loading station.
Our insider tip
Trattoria Bella Italia (Brandstwiete 58). A very small, inconspicuous Italian restaurant near the Speicherstadt historical warehouse district. When the door closes behind you, you are no longer in Germany but in the centre of Italy with the Evangelista family. There’s pizza and pasta and tiramisu and it just tastes like mum’s.
